Three ballet suites by the Hanoverian kapellmeister Jean Baptiste Farinelli (1655-1720) show his highly original adaptation of French dance characteristics, while three of his “Grands Concerts” occupy a unique position in the history of music. Each of the latter being in one movement and consisting of contrasting sections, they have nevertheless an individually very clearly defined “affekt” content, ranging from the funereal tone in “tombeau” manner to the playful joviality of the “galant.”. This recording is supplemented with a “division” by Farinelli’s brother Michel Farinel (1649 – ?), this being a prototype of the “la follia” variation scheme.
